Bradshaw's Illustrated Hand-Book for Tourists in Great Britain and Ireland with beautiful steel engraved illustrations of the scenery of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Section II. Published by Adams, London and Blacklock, Manchester 1881. In soft card covers size 121 pages plus a 16 page index and 66 pages of railway timetables, ferry routes, hotel information and advertising. One section of four that were published as Bradshaw Guides in the second part of the 19th century, and used as the basis for the Portillo TV programmes. Each stands alone as a guide in its own original binding though all four were also published in one hardback edition. This section covers Wales and much of the north of England. With a map of North Wales, a folding plan of Sheffield, 20 small engravings and a full page engraving of the Britannia Bridge. New cloth spine.VG condition. £195
Cheffins's Maps and Sections of the Grand Railway Communication from London to the North, comprising the following lines: London and Birmingham and Aylesbury, Grand Junction, Liverpool and Manchester, Bolton and Manchester, Grand Union, Chester and Crewe and Birkenhead, Birmingham and Derby Junction, North Midland, Midland Counties, Sheffield and Rotherham and York and North Midland, Leeds and Hull and Selby, Sheffield and Manchester and Leeds, published by Cheffins, London circa 1843. Three folding maps on stiff good quality paper size, 66 by 23 cm., 64 by 23 cm. and 55 by 23 cm. The third of the three also has a section "shewing the inclinations of the railway". Bound in stiff original card covers with the Cheffins' label to the front. Occasional small ink spots on the Grand Junction map, otherwise Good condition. £125
Bengal Nagpur Railway Company Timetable December 1924 to January and February 1925. Published by the Company, London and Calcutta 1924. In illustrated paper covers size 20 by 27 cm. 93 pages. With a large folding map inside the rear cover. Contents include details of the company, ticket prices and information, detailed timetables and some fascinating contemporary advertising, with several full-page colour illustrations. Some repairs to spine and edges of covers, but overall Good condition. £75
Official Railway Map of Scotland. Prepared and published by the Railway Clearing House, London 1941. Drawn and engraved by J & W Emslie. On folding linen in 30 sections, size 120 by 81 cm. Scale seven and a half inched to the mile. Many of the lines are colour-coded and a key explains the lines run by the LNER and LMS. Other lines are shown with the names of the various companies printed alongside. Heights shown by shading or hachuring. A detailed map in VG condition. Folds into original boards with the title gold-stamped to the front. The marbled endpapers have the office stamp of the Southern railway Chief Engineer’s Office. £75
Section of the Proposed Railway from London to Birmingham. A set of gradient plans bound in one volume, each size 70 by 24 cm. Nine pages. Vertical scale 100 feet to the inch. Unpublished, so presumably working drawings or plans intended for the original London to Birmingham line. No date but circa 1835. On paper with some hand colouring. Each page shows between 10 to 12 miles of line, with towns, canals, hills etc. all clearly indicated above the section. Below each section are some contract numbers in pencil. The London end of the line begins by the towpath of the Regents Canal and the pencil note below reads Contract no.1 B Camden to River Brent. Title is on a label to the front cover. Both buff paper covers are nibbled at the edges and the front cover detached, though the binding is otherwise intact. There is some staining to the edges of the first few pages but overall the plans are in Good condition. £325
